The Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) mushroom is also known as hou tou gu or yamabushitake. It received its modern name due to how it looks as it grows. It is a white, large, shaggy mushroom that resembles a white lion’s mane in appearance. It is known by a few other names, such as monkey head mushroom, bearded tooth mushroom, satyr’s beard, bearded hedgehog mushroom, pom pom mushroom, or bearded tooth fungus.

Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia are conditions that result from cell degeneration in the brain. Our brain’s ability to wire new connections decreases over time and this is one possible explanation as to why, when we get older, our brain’s functions have a tendency to decline.

Studies have found that there are two special compounds in Lion’s Mane mushrooms that can stimulate the growth of brain cells: hericenones and erinacines. Lion’s Mane is believed to be able to prevent the neuronal damage from amyloid-beta plaques, which accumulate in the brain during Alzheimer’s disease, thus reducing the symptoms of memory loss. There are studies with adults that show great results for improved brain functioning. In just four months, they observed huge improvements in older adults who took Lion’s Mane daily.

Research has found that Lion’s Mane mushroom extract may help speed recovery from brain and spinal cord injuries by repairing and stimulating the growth of nerve cells.

Lion’s Mane extract may also help reduce the severity of brain damage after a stroke.

Animal and test-tube studies indicate that Lion’s Mane extract can kill cancer cells and slow the spread of tumors. While these results are promising, there is a need for more research to clinically prove these claims.
